Jayalath is a true social worker – Tissa Attanayake

The General Secretary of United National Party (UNP) Tissa Attanayake stated that the deceased MP. Dr Jayalath Jayawardena is a true social workers and a great humanitarian.Commenting on the memorable service done by the former UNP parliamentarian, he stated that Dr Jayalath Jayawadena has done a great service as a doctor and made an immense
effort to secure the rights of minor communities and brought up their issues in Inter-Parliamentary Sessions and international forums such as Common Wealth.

Due to such attempts the government made an attempt to label him as a pro-LTTE, but he was never an adherent of LTTE, he said.

Attanayake further stated, the special characteristic of Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena was he always stood up for what he believed in, and was a politician that never fought for privileges.

He can be acknowledged as a politician who did not trade his position for material gains and privileges, as he remained a UNP MP despite government’s request to join the ruling party.

He raised his voice for labour rights with Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya, for rights of parliamentarians at the parliament and international forums and always made it a point to officially or unofficially attend all Common Wealth and Inter –Parliamentary Sessions, said Attanayake.

He was first elected to Parliament in 1994 and under the UNP government served as the Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement, he added.
He was serving as the deputy general secretary of UNP when he passed away, he noted.7:55 PM 5/31/2013
