UNP not informed of Bill to abolish PC’s power to merge

With the government expected to present an Urgent Bill to strip the Provincial Councils of the power to merge, as provided under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution today, the UNP has decided that it would take a decision only after being officially informed.

Informed sources said that the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had told the party Working Committee Meeting yesterday that there had been no official communication by the government on its Bill to amend the 13th Amendment.

"We can act only after being officially informed about the Bill," he had said while observing that it had to be first discussed at the Party leaders and Parliamentary Group meetings.
