The 10 basic objectives of Samagi Agreement

The Conventional public agreement (Samagi givisuma) bearing 10 fundamental policies of the Samagi movement, which was created with the collaboration of the Opposition political parties along with the UNP and about 80 civil organizations, will be signed today (22) at 2.00pm, at the Colombo public library auditorium.



The main three points of this agreement is to establish a Cabinet system who will be accountable for the parliament by abolishing the executive presidency, abolishing the 18th amendment and reinstating independent commissions and to protect the rights of all the ethnic and religious groups.

The basic agreements of the declaration are as follows..


01. Abolishing the Executive Presidency and establishing a Prime Minister and Cabinet responsible to Parliament.

02. Abolishing the 18th Amendment , re- adopting the 17th Amendment and strengthening the full independence of govt. institutions.
03. Protecting the rights of all national communities who consider Sri Lanka the Homeland and preserving their identity.

04. Abolishing the Preferential Voting System and thereby strengthening parliamentary democracy.

05. Strengthening the right to information and protection and the Freedom of Speech and Expression.

06. Re -establishing the Rule of Law and the independence of the Judiciary.

07. Strengthening Laws to control the manage the cost of living, and against corruption

08. Protecting welfare measures including free education and free health services.

09. Introducing a Peoples' Oriented Development Programme, as opposed to one which is beneficial to the rulers, minimizing the gap between the have and have nots.

10. As a basic step towards the restoration of good governance, through the implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LL R C), ensuring the sovereignty of all communities, thereby consolidating the independence of the country.

UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, along with the leaders of other opposition political parties and civil organization activists will be attesting this document today.
