Stop joking and resolve differences with India - UNP

Minister Mervyn Silva’s offer to go to Tamil Nadu and stop attacks on Sri Lankans there was the biggest joke and not worth considering, the UNP said yesterday.UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunathillake, MP told The Island that Sri Lanka was being humiliated in other counties including in Tamil Nadu as well as at the United Nations due to the Rajapaksa regime’s inability to
comprehend global politics and its ignorance of diplomacy.

A high level government delegation should visit India and sort out the differences between the two countries in a spirit of give and take, the UNP spokesman said, adding that the situation should not be trivialized by giving a free hand to the likes of Mervyn Silva.

The war had been won due to the sacrifices made by all Sri Lankans, but the Rajapaksas talked and behaved as if they were the only ones who could take credit. There was a big difference between winning the war and creating an environment of peace and harmony in which all communities could live as brothers and sisters, the MP noted.

MP Karunathillake said that nearly four years after the war had ended, the masses who made many sacrifices were expecting substantial relief, but they had been thrown from the frying pan into the fire, with regular hikes in the prices of essential commodities and services.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year around the corner but the people were without the wherewithal to celebrate it. Instead, those who had voted for the ‘Betel Leaf’ were now wondering when they would get the next meal, the UNP spokesman sad.

India had, he said, recently reduced the price of a litre of petrol and diesel by Rs.2.50 due to a drop in world market prices, but the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) was making a huge profit for which it had blamed the infamous oil hedging deal.

Trade unionists who had exposed the rampant corruption and waste at CPC were being charge sheeted, while officials responsible for importing contaminated petrol had gone scot free, Karunathillake said.
