FNF election workshop: Probe Ministers, MPs first - UNP

The UNP said yesterday that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) should question government Ministers and MPs first, before it conducted a probe into a Friedrich Neumann Foundation (FNF) funded Election Campaign Management Workshop, held for UNP MPs in Colombo recently.Parliamentarians Harin Fernando and Ruwan Wijewardena, addressing a news conference, said that similar programmes had
been organised by FNF in the past and had been attended by many ruling party members, including Ministers G. L. Peiris, Keheliya Rambukwella, Mahinda Samarasinghe and Sarath Amunugama.

They said that Sagarika Delgoda, the FNF’s Sri Lanka representative had been taken to the CID and questioned for hours. But she was not harassed for coordinating political programmes involving senior government figures.

Unable to sell the war victory, the Rajapaksa regime, which was struggling on both the economic and diplomatic fronts, had revived the LTTE bogey once again, while accusing the UNP of conspiring with foreign forces to topple it from power, the MP’s noted.

Harin Fernando, said that it was absurd to label them as traitors for simply attending a workshop, while absolving ruling party members of any blame.

Ruwan Wijewardena, while describing the allegation that he had received money from the FNF to topple the government as "rubbish", said it indicated that the Rajapaksa regime, in desperation, had revived its mud slinging tactics to counter the rapid reduction in its voter base.

"We will oust this dictatorial regime through the people’s vote." he said adding that the masses who were struggling to cope with the rising cost of living were rallying behind the UNP.

Western Provincial Councillor Harshana Rajakaruna said that it was the UNP which had suffered most at the hands of the LTTE, with many of its leaders being killed.

The UNP represented all communities and could not be branded as traitors, just because it spoke against injustices committed against the minorities, he said.

Harshana Rajakaruna said that the CID without wasting time probing a small sum given to host an election management workshop, should launch a thorough investigation into what had happened to the LTTE’s billion dollar assets and the wealth owned by its former leaders who were now within government ranks.
