A govt. MP led mob attack on Ranil – UNP

Tuesday’s stone throwing mob attack on UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and few others after they had attended the funerals of some fisherman in Balapitiya had been led by a government MP, the UNP alleged yesterday.Western Provincial Councilor, Niroshan Paddukke told a press conference in Colombo, that the government MP had resorted to thuggery in the belief that political power would last forever, but he was only exposing his ignorance and inexperience.

That parliamentarian had told the media on Tuesday night that he would not tolerate anyone meddling in his electorate, the UNP Provincial Councillor said, querying if attending a funeral was tantamount to interfering in others’ affairs.

Describing the government MP as a "Podiyen" "Parachuted" into politics, Paddukke said that it was the height of audacity for him to be allegedly leading stone throwing mobs against the Leader of the Opposition who was a former Prime Minister.

A man who did not respect the dead was not fit to hold public office, Padukka noted.

Paddukke said that the government MP had behaved as if he owned Balapitiya, forgetting that his duty was to serve the people without going around threatening and assaulting Opposition politicians.

If there was a semblance of democracy left in the country the MP should be dealt with according to the law, the Provincial Councillor said, noting that Wickremesinghe’s vehicle had been stoned and two UNP Pradeshiya Sabha Members, Asela de Soysa and W. D. Senarath injured as a result.
