A simple tribute to a simple person

The sudden passing away of United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Dr Jayalath Jayawardena at the age of 59, after a brief illness was a real shock to us. Dr Jayawardena, a medical doctor by profession was elected to Parliament from the UNP in 1994.It is with great sadness that we face the loss of a much respected great politician in our country. Dr. Jayalath has had to face tremendous challenges and false accusations, insults, intimidation during his life time for standing up and facing the truth.
He never stumbled or gave up in his endeavour to do what he felt was right for the people of our land.

An outstanding characteristic of his was serving those of other faiths wholeheartedly, even though by faith he was a Roman Catholic. However he never compromised his faith for political gains. He remained faithful to His God till the end.

When he led the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya as its President he brought in a new dimension to it. He directed them on the right road with its correct perspectives which in turn brought in recognition both at a national and international level. He faced irate employers as well as the media fearlessly as a voice of the working class and balanced the scales of justice in the right manner.

I had the opportunity of working with him just prior to his leaving for Singapore for medical treatment. When the Lakvanitha Organization met to conduct a programme for those in this region we were so happy to find that he had organized the programme to perfection even though he was not physically present, having at that very time to leave for Singapore. In fact he had so much respect for women that he initiated a branch of the Lakvanitha Movement in the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya too. He recognized the importance and the role women could play in any field and boosting their role in political field as well I feel much privileged to have been associated with him as an erstwhile leader of our country. At no time did he forget his duty as a Medical Doctor too and remained faithful to the Hippocratic Oath.

We will indeed miss his quiet unassuming presence, his well mannered speeches, his humility and his ability to be one with the rest.

May he rest in peace!
