Harin says Dayasiri committed political Hara-Kiri

UNP MP Harin Fernando yesterday said that his erstwhile colleague Dayasiri Jayasekera had committed political Hara-kiri by resigning from the MP post to contest the forthcoming North Western Provincial Council on the ruling party ticket.

Addressing a press conference held at the Committee Room 2 in the Parliamentary complex, soon after MP Jayasekera had resigned, MP Fernando said that he was ashamed of Dayasiri’s conduct as he had repeatedly promised that he would not leave the party. "I have assured people, in media interviews and TV talk shows that Dayasiri would not leave us.

Hereafter, I would never give character certificates to politicians."

Fernando, pointing to a photocopy of the Divaina newspaper of Monday, said MP Jayasekera had told media at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday that he would not leave the party. "He would not be able to cheat people like this. He has committed political suicide. "He had some problems in the party, but I pointed out to him to learn from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had remained patiently without leaving the party."

MP Jayasekera had no future in the SLFP, Fernando said. "Jayasekera polled the highest number of votes contesting on the SLFP ticket to the Panduawanuwara Pradeshiya Sabha but he was not given the Chairmanship. He left the SLFP and joined us. It was Rosy Senanayake who made Jayasekera an MP. Senanayake, as the Ambassador to Malaysia got Malik Samarawickrema to appoint Jayasekera a party organizer. It is sad that all these efforts were useless."

MPs Ranjan Ramanayake, Ajith P. Perera and Ruwan Wijewardene also addressed the press.
