Life threatening attack on Malaka indicates true state of the country -Tissa Attanayake

When a Minister’s son had been bashed up in broad daylight, resulting in him being admitted to the intensive care unit, the safety of lesser mortals could only be left to one’s imagination, the UNP said yesterday.UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, addressing a news conference in Colombo, said that according to the tough talking Public Relations Minister, Mervyn Silva, a gang of 12 had assaulted his son, Malaka, at the Odel Car Park in Colombo 7 on Monday and also attempted to abduct him.

"If an attempt had been made to abduct a Minister’s son who had all the protection, it goes without saying what the plight of those who are critical of the government would be," he noted.

Attanayake pointed out that this was not the first time sons of Ministers and Parliamentarians, in the Rajapaksa regime, had not only attacked each other in public, but also caused serious injuries to members of the public. However, on each and every occasion pressure was applied on the complainant to drop the case.

The masses, he said, had not only to deal with an ever increasing crime rate, but also the skyrocketing cost of living which has robbed them of even their meager savings.

The latest violent incident, involving Malaka, has proved what the UNP had been saying ever since the war had ended, with regard to the deteriorating law and order situation, the MP observed.

Attanayake said that the President and his Ministers were sermonizing on a daily basis about the "healthy" state of the economy, while the country had been mortgaged for generations to come.
