Govt. should talk to India, halt attacks on Lankans - UNP

The UNP yesterday called on the government to talk with India and ensure that attacks on Sri Lankans, especially in Chennai, be halted. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, addressing a press conference in Colombo, said that the negative approach of the Rajapaksa regime to national issues had led to Sri Lankans being attacked and humiliated on foreign soil.
While condemning the assault of a Buddhist Monk from Kandy at the Chennai railway station on Monday, he said that urgent measures were required to resolve the disturbing situation.

"Diplomacy and not confrontation is the way out," he said adding that the government as a first step should implement at least the key recommendations of its very own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission. The second successive US Resolution on Accountability and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka, to be presented to the UNHRC in Geneva on March 21, could also be deferred if only the pledges that were given to the UN last year were honoured, he observed.
