JVP has forgotten the killing of over 6,000 UNPers – Tissa

The UNP said yesterday that the JVP, which had staged two insurrections causing death and destruction, was making a big noise over the 1988-1989 Matale graves, but it had conveniently forgotten that over 6,000 UNPers had been killed during the same period."We also want an impartial inquiry into the murders that took place during the period in question. Many of the officials who functioned in the affected areas are still alive. The history of this country should be recorded correctly for the benefit of future generations,"
the UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, told a news conference in Colombo.

The then UNP government had to protect the country and its people against a group of misguided youth who went on a killing spree. Had the JVP forgotten the violence it perpetrated, which resulted in over 6,000 UNPers having to pay the supreme price just because they were members a political party? In addition, a large number of civilians and members of the clergy were wiped out due to not obeying their orders, he noted.

The fear psychosis that the JVP created with its "Chit System" was still fresh in the minds of the people who were at the receiving end. The current leaders of the once dreaded Marxist party were behaving like new born babies, Attanayake said adding they were sadly mistaken if they thought that the masses had forgotten the sickening violence they had resorted to, resulting in the loss of precious lives and destruction of public property worth billions of rupees.
