Ranil off to India

Amid strains on Indo-Lanka relations, India has invited Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for talks on the present situation in Sri Lanka, political sources said. Accordingly, Mr. Wickremesinghe will leave for India tonight and return on Thursday.According to UNP sources, Mr. Wickremesinghe is expected to meet the representatives of both the Central Government of India and the Opposition.
However, there were only sketchy details about the intended meetings with Indian leaders.

Sri Lanka was possibly miffed by India’s vote for the United States (US)-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Also, there were irritants to the relationship between the two countries after two Sri Lankan Buddhist monks were attacked in Tamil Nadu by mobs.
India has repeatedly called for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, the de-militarisation of the north, and a probe into alleged human rights violations during the final stages of the war.
